Italian Charm Bracelet Size Guide: How Many Links You Need
Most adults need 17 to 20 links. Measure your wrist just above the wrist bone, add about 1 cm for comfort, then divide by 0.9 cm (the width of one standard link). A 16 cm wrist needs roughly 19 links. Every link can hold a charm, so a full bracelet carries 17 to 20 charms.

What an Italian charm bracelet is made of
The modular charm bracelet was introduced by the Florence jeweller Nomination in 1987 and became a worldwide trend in the early 2000s, according to Wikipedia’s history of the style. Each bracelet is a row of flat square links joined by small springs inside every link. That spring is what makes the bracelet stretch over your hand and sit neatly on your wrist.
The standard link is 9 mm wide. Almost every Italian charm you can buy, including every charm in our charm collection, is made for that 9 mm size, so they all fit together. Plain links are simply blank charms waiting to be swapped for something that means more to you.
How to measure your wrist
- Wrap a soft tape measure around your wrist just above the wrist bone, where you would wear a watch.
- Keep it snug but not tight. No tape measure? Use a strip of paper or a piece of string, mark where it overlaps, then measure it against a ruler.
- Add about 1 cm for comfort. Add a little more if you like a looser, jangly fit or plan to wear lots of dangle charms.
Measure twice, ideally at the end of the day when wrists are slightly larger.
How many links do you need?
Each link adds 0.9 cm to the length of the bracelet. Use this chart as your starting point.

Children usually need 13 to 15 links. Between two sizes? Go one link bigger. It is always easier to take a link out than to squeeze into a bracelet that pinches.

How to add or remove links
Changing the size uses the same move as adding a charm. Bend the bracelet gently so two links open at an angle, slide the hook of one link out of the other, then close the gap and straighten the bracelet so it clicks back into place. How many charms can one bracelet hold?
Every link can become a charm, so a finished bracelet holds as many charms as it has links, usually 17 to 20. Nobody has to fill it at once. Most people start with a handful of meaningful pieces and add more for birthdays, trips and milestones.
